Transit rewards

Today, Waymo is excited to announce our transit rewards program, which we will initially offer in the San Francisco Bay Area, with future cities to follow. This first-of-its-kind initiative rewards riders with Waymo Cash when they connect their Waymo rides with public transit and use their Visa card. We’ll start with employee access before gradually rolling out to the public in the coming weeks.

Public transit networks and shared autonomous vehicles are part of a complementary mobility ecosystem. As transit agencies modernize their payment systems to accept tap-to-pay debit and credit cards, multimodal trips are becoming more convenient than ever.

“Governor Newsom has challenged all of us to build a transportation system that meets Californians where they are, and that means making the trip to the station as effortless as the train ride itself,” said California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin. “CalSTA welcomes innovations that reward people for choosing transit and make a multimodal trip feel like one seamless journey.”

Recent surveys show that over 50% of Waymo riders in our most mature service areas (San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix) use public transit, so we’re proud to invest directly in this connectivity to make everyday commutes easier and more affordable. The transit rewards program works alongside the regional transfer discount programs and tap-to-pay model launched in the San Francisco Bay Area last December. The program applies to all 27 San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies that accept contactless Visa tap-to-pay.

“San José has always believed innovation should make everyday life work better,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “This partnership does exactly that by using new technology to strengthen public transit, not replace it, making regional travel more seamless and giving people more ways to get where they need to go.”

To participate, riders will link their Visa card in the Waymo app. When riders in the SF Bay Area use their Visa card to take a Waymo trip and public transit within 2 hours of each other, we will automatically issue $2.85 in Waymo Cash, which is the cost of a bus fare in San Francisco.

Alongside the launch of our transit rewards program, we’re also announcing a partnership with Caltrain, which accepts tap-to-pay. Waymo will lease 40 dedicated Caltrain station parking spaces to better serve transit riders with staged vehicles. This is a model we hope to replicate with additional transit agencies, ultimately enabling more seamless connections between Waymo’s service and public transit.

This launch is the next step toward making our vision of shared mobility a reality. By taking the learnings from our transit credit pilot programs in San Francisco and Los Angeles, adding Waymo’s service to the LA Metro Mobility Wallet program, and kicking off a strategic microtransit partnership with Via in Chandler, AZ, we’ve been steadily learning what it takes to offer a successful transit integration product and are pleased to formally launch transit rewards.

“Shared mobility is a team effort, and our autonomous ride-hailing service helps expand clean transportation options for everyone,” said Adam Lenz, Head of Sustainability & Environment at Waymo. “We’re thrilled to partner with local transit agencies to fill multimodal gaps and make daily commutes easier through our new transit rewards program.”

Our goal is to expand this transit rewards program and transit agency partnerships to more cities over time, ultimately making shared, all-electric transportation more accessible and affordable for everyone.

Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived

FoxDev Studio opens the projects, forms and tables you already have and runs them the way you remember: no rewrite, no conversion, no export step.

Point it at a folder you have not opened in years, and what is there is what you get.

Projects, forms, class libraries, menus and reports open straight from the files you already have. Nothing is migrated first, and nothing is left behind.

Forms, classes, menus and reports are edited where you expect them to be, alongside the project manager, the Command Window and a debugger that stops on your line.

Tables, indexes, memos and databases are read and written in place. What sits on disk afterwards is the same kind of file it was before.

The system calls, the automation objects and the old add-in libraries your application leans on keep working, so the parts nobody wants to touch stay untouched.

The IDE, on Visual FoxPro's own sample projects. Every picture is a real session.

Small differences are what break an old application: a number printed a column too wide, an event arriving a moment late, an error with the wrong number on it. So behaviour here is settled by asking Visual FoxPro itself and matching its answer, rather than by reading a reference page and hoping.

What comes out of that is a runtime written from scratch: quick to start, self-contained, and straightforward about the corners it has not reached yet.

Visual FoxPro stopped at version 9, and at 32 bits. This is the same language, rebuilt on a foundation that has not been frozen since 2007. Four pieces are what make that possible.

Visual FoxPro is a 32-bit program, and that decides more than it appears to. It is why a table stops at two gigabytes, why a memo file stops at two gigabytes, and why a big report runs out of memory on a machine with plenty to spare. The limits are signed 32-bit numbers buried in the file handling, not a licensing decision anybody made.

FoxDev Studio is 64-bit throughout. Every file offset is 64-bit and a table is never read into memory at all, so the same .dbf that used to stop dead carries on into the hundreds of gigabytes. One thing to know before you lean on it: a table grown past two gigabytes will not open in Visual FoxPro again. If you still work in both, that is a one-way door.

Visual FoxPro compiled your program to p-code and shipped a runtime to execute it. This is the same arrangement, made again: a compiler and a bytecode interpreter written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, so one machine runs your code wherever the application runs. The editor checks what you type through that very compiler, so what it underlines and what the runtime refuses cannot drift apart.

A running program is a fiber. When it needs something from the world outside (a message box, a modal form, the next record) it does not call out and block; it yields, the work is done while the machine is off the stack, and the answer is handed back. That is why MESSAGEBOX() stops your program without freezing the window behind it, why READ EVENTS waits without spinning, and whySetFocus can fire GotFocus, and Init can run while a form is still being built, in the order FoxPro always did it.

How the machine works and what it runs.

A running form is a live tree of objects with the properties you would expect, and the interface is drawn straight from that tree by React. Each object watches only itself, so THISFORM.lblGreeting.Caption = cMsg repaints one label rather than the whole form. On a dense screen that is the difference between instant and sluggish.

The same tree is what the designer edits, one step earlier. There is no second model kept in step with the first, which is the usual place a form and its designer start telling different stories.

An .fll is a 32-bit image, and every process in a 64-bit application is 64-bit, so nothing inside the application itself could ever open one. Rather than tell you it is impossible, SET LIBRARY TO starts a small 32-bit process whose only job is to hold your library, and the runtime talks to it. The calls are synchronous, because a program may call into a library halfway through an expression, and an answer that arrived later would not be an answer. It is measured against real libraries: the encryption library, FoxTools, and libraries built from Microsoft's own API samples.

Nothing 64-bit needs the bridge: DECLARE … DLL reaches a modern library in the same process, and automation objects are reached the way they always were. The old road stays open; it just is not the only one any more.

Everything you have written still means what it always meant. FoxScript only adds on top: a block you can hand to something else to run later, and a way to answer a web request from the code that already knows your business.

Every line of that runs on the same runtime your forms do. The queries, the cursor and the library call are ordinary FoxPro; the lambda and the server are what FoxScript adds: no second language, no service to stand up beside it.The keywords and the HTTP APIare each written down in full.

The nightly is rebuilt from every push to main and published as a pre-release on GitHub. Unsigned, so the first launch asks you to confirm.

Each part of the product is written down, including the parts that are not there yet.

Work already mapped out, roughly in the order it is being built.

Lindsay Clancy's attorneys ask court to investigate holdout juror

Sept. 22 (UPI) — The lawyer for Lindsay Clancy, who was charged in the deaths of her three children, has asked the judge in the case to investigate the holdout juror, Michael P. Desronvil, who refused to acquit Clancy, which led to a mistrial.

The lawyer, Kevin Reddington, submitted the request Friday to Judge William Sullivan to get the juror’s mobile phone metadata from when he was deliberating the case. It also requests the court preserve the original questionnaires, jury notes and the court’s responses.

“The inquiry will not touch the substance of deliberations,” the motion said.

The motion doesn’t seek any particular outcome of the investigation, but Clancy’s lawyers also submitted more documents under seal.

Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the killings of her three children: Cora, 5; Dawson 3, and Callan, 8 months. The children’s bodies were found by their father, Patrick Clancy, in their Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.

Clancy never denied strangling them. Her lawyers argued that she had been suffering from postpartum psychosis. The jury was deadlocked 11-1.

Desronvil said on Friday that the other jurors had repeatedly cut him off when he tried to discuss his views on the case. Some of the other jurors have accused him of refusing to follow the law. He said he has no doubt that Clancy is guilty.

Desronvil’s lawyer, Edward Paltzik, posted on X early Tuesday morning defending his client.

“The Looney Tunes motion filed yesterday by Kevin ‘Shooter McGavin’ Reddington to investigate Michael is not just an attack on Michael for being the courageous lone holdout juror, Paltzik said. “Reddington’s motion is actually a full-frontal attack on the U.S. Constitution. Because if the new normal is that jurors are going to face brutal reprisals for disagreeing with a defense attorney, you can kiss the Sixth Amendment good-bye.”

Also on Monday, Reddington and co-counsel Martin Weinberg filed a motion to dismiss the case against Clancy on double jeopardy grounds. They argued that the circumstances of the trial prevent the prosecution from trying her again.

“This able attorney is obligated to leave no stone unturned,” Jack Lu, a retired Massachusetts Superior Court judge, told The New York Times by text Monday. But undoing the mistrial would be a long shot, he added.

Pentagon changing promotion process to ‘battlefield’ assessment

Sept. 22 (UPI) — The Pentagon will change the process by which new generals are promoted to a “battlefield-style” assessment called the Joint Warfighter Evaluation, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday.

Hegseth said in a social media post that the new assessment for eligible colonels and Navy captains will “cut bureaucracy and demand true meritocracy” and screen officers on “their ability to fight, adapt and win.”

“America needs warfighters who can master a chaotic battle space,” he said.

Hegseth did not say how the Pentagon will measure “joint warfighting ability.” The promotion system that will be phased out featured boards that considered officers based on written evaluations from their superiors through their overall career.

The defense secretary has said before that the U.S. military has promoted too many leaders based on what he deemed the wrong reasons. Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran, has blocked many Navy, Air Force and Army promotions to one-star generals or admirals, including those of Black people and women.

“Real toxic leadership is endangering subordinates with low standards,” he said in an address last year to military leaders, Star and Stripes, a daily U.S. military newspaper, reported. “Real toxic leadership is promoting people based on immutable characteristics or quotas instead of basedon merit.”

Hegseth said that Stuart Scheller, the deputy chief of staff to the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, will lead the effort.

In the video, he compared it to the Louisiana Maneuvers, a series of military exercises and wargames before the United States entered World War II, and cited leaders that emerged through that endeavor.

The new evaluations will bring “that standard to the modern multi-domain fight,” Hegseth said. “This evaluation is an objective equalizer. The scenario only cares about operational decisions under pressure.”

Grand jury: No charges in the death of Nolan Wells

Sept. 22 (UPI) — A grand jury found that there will be no criminal charges in the death of Mississippi Black teenager Nolan Wells who died on a boating trip with his white friends, the district attorney announced.

Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath announced the ruling in a video message posted Monday on social media. She said the grand jury returned a “no true bill,” which means there was not sufficient evidence to indict anyone. The video and grand jury report were posted on the district attorney’s Facebook page.

Since his death, there has been public outcry suggesting that the 18-year-old’s death was suspicious as he was the only Black person on the boat that went to a Fourth of July Party on Horn Island that day.

The grand jury heard from 43 witnesses and reviewed evidence collected at the scene, digital evidence, police reports and interviews, videos, images and maps collected during the investigation, NBC News reported.

The grand jury was made up people from a mix of ethnicities: “12 Caucasians, five African Americans, one Asian, two Hispanics, two Native Americans and one individual who preferred ‘other,'” the grand jury report said. There were 13 men and 10 women on the panel.

“There is absolutely no evidence to support the allegations that Nolan’s disappearance and death were racially motivated,” Myers McIlrath said. “Nolan’s friends loved Nolan, and Nolan loved them. Nolan chose to stay on the island that day, and there is not a scintilla of evidence to contradict that.”

Myers McIlrath also mentioned Ben Crump, the Wells’ family attorney.

“I’m not suggesting that a grieving mother police the rumors surrounding her child’s death,” she said. “What I am suggesting is that the Crump team knew better but did not do better.”

Crump responded Tuesday, “This grand jury result leaves us with more questions than answers. Nolan’s family will not rest until we know what happened to him, and neither will we.”

“Mississippi’s own pathologist found two bruises on the back of this young man’s head … An independent autopsy documented traces of blood and recent blunt force injuries to the back of Nolan’s head and his back. To this day, not one person has explained how they got there,” he added.

“We don’t know how Nolan died, and neither does the State of Mississippi. Mississippi must keep investigating,” Crump said.

Wells’ parents are expected to speak publicly Tuesday.

The friends on the boat told police that they had to leave early because their boat started taking on water. They said Wells chose to stay on the island and catch a ride back later.

The report said it was common for people on Horn Island to “socialize on boats and in the water,” and that it was “not unusual or suspicious” for some to ride home on different boats. The island is only accessible by boat.

The report said there was no evidence that Wells had any sort of physical fight or argument with anyone. It also said “that the position of, the condition of, time of discovery, and location of Mr. Wells’ body is consistent with drowning.”

But Crump and the Wells family do not believe he drowned. They have previously said he was athletic and a good swimmer. The family’s legal team had an independent autopsy, which found that his cause and manner of death were “undetermined.”

U.S. restricts visas for 32 people, most tied to Prince Group

Sept. 22 (UPI) — The U.S. State Department imposed cybercrime-related visa restrictions on 32 individuals, most of whom are linked to Prince Group, a Cambodia-based conglomerate the Trump administration accuses of being a transnational criminal organization behind cyber scams targeting Americans.

The individuals blacklisted Monday were not identified by the State Department, whose spokesman, Tomas Pigott, accused in a statement of being “responsible for or complicit in defrauding Americans through cybercrime, cyber-enabled crime and related activity.”

Pigott said all those targeted Monday were involved in cybercrime and that the majority were affiliated with the Prince Group, which the United States designated a transnational criminal organization in October 2025, when Britain jointly imposed sanctions on the group in what the U.S. Treasury called at the time the “largest action ever targeting criminal networks in Southeast Asia.”

Based in Phnom Penh, the Prince Group has investments in entertainment, finance and real estate while also engaging in transnational crimes, such as the construction, operation and management of scam compounds that rely on human trafficking to conduct cyber fraud operations targeting victims around the world, according to the U.S. Treasury.

The Treasury sanctioned 146 targets, including Prince Group’s 38-year-old founder Chen Zhi, who also goes by Vincent, as well as 117 affiliated businesses in the initial Prince Group-related sanctioning, followed by an expansion of the sanctions to nine individuals and 26 entities in June.

Pigott said cybercriminals scam Americans out of tens of billions of dollars a year, including $18.2 billion last year alone.

“The Trump administration will use every available tool to protect Americans, dismantle criminal scam networks and impose costs on those who enable them,” Pigott said.

“Those complicit in devastating families and communities nationwide will be denied entry into the United States.”

South Korea and the European Union have also sanctioned the Prince Group.

Trump signs security deal with Greenland, Denmark

Sept. 22 (UPI) — U.S. President Donald Trump signed a security deal with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark on Tuesday, saying the United States will establish two “very major” new military bases on the island.

“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate locations,” Trump said Tuesday during a speech at the United Nations in New York City. “We’ll be building two very major military bases.”

The island remains Danish territory, and the new agreement gives the United States powers related to defense there. The text of the agreement, which was released by the Danish government, shows it has no end date and that it can be amended only by mutual consent, The Washington Post reported.

The deal comes after months of tension between the United States and Denmark as Trump threatened to seize the island — a semi-autonomous Danish terrority — by military means. On Tuesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who also signed the deal, lauded the agreement.

Frederiksen said the agreement is “bigger and better” than a 1951 treaty between the United States and Denmark, The Post reported. That agreement allowed the United States to first open military bases on the island. Nielsen said the new deal focuses on the “people of Greenland, our rights, our livelihoods and the development of our country.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. part of the deal includes the establishment of a “Golden Dome defense system” and says the United States will reestablish a military base in Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and set up a new base in Mestersvig, on the eastern side of the island.

As of now, there is one U.S. base on Greenland: Pituffik Space Base on the northwest coast. The United States will be “allowed to modernize and expand its activities” at the base as part of the agreement, The Hill reported.

The security agreement bars China and Russia from establishing a military presence on Greenland.

U.S. officials said the agreement will not need to be approved by Congress. However, parliaments in Greenland and Denmark must ratify the deal before it can become law.
