Sept. 22 (UPI) — The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced Tuesday that it has canceled about 315,000 enrollments in the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace, affecting about 760,000 people, because of alleged fraud and abuse.
The CMS said the actions were part of efforts by the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
“We are shutting down unauthorized Marketplace enrollments and returning approximately $2.2 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy in a statement.
The CMS said it has created an anti-fraud coordination group to deal with the matter and that the group will meet regularly to coordinate enforcement. It said it will continue working with health insurance companies to investigate potential fraudulent enrollments.
Health and Human Services has persistedly alleged fraud in government healthcare programs this year. It has withheld funds from Democrat-led states, such as California and Minnesota, because of alleged fraud in Medicaid and other programs.
