Sept. 21 (UPI) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met Monday with President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion as Trump visited the city for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting marked the third time the two have met in person and the first time in New York City. Mamdani and Trump briefly spoke to reporters after the meeting, with Mamdani returning to answer more questions after Trump’s departure.
Mamdani said he spoke to Trump about a variety of subjects, including Temporary Protected Status for immigrants, which allows them to work legally in the United States without fear of deportation if they can’t safety return to their home country, CNN reported.
The Trump administration recently removed this status from Haitian immigrants.
Mamdani said he told the president the program is critical for many New Yorkers.
“I made very clear this is a priority for me, a priority for our city, and I appreciated the consideration,” he said.
The mayor also said he spoke about the safety of immigrants in New York City and shared “very strong opinions.”
Trump said the two spoke about a massive development plan, Sunnyside Yard, that backed by Mamdani and said he’d considered backing it.
Mamdani said he stood by his decision to meet with Trump and that his focus is delivering for New York City.
“I committed over the course of the campaign, as well as while being in office, that I would meet with anyone, work with anyone that could deliver for New Yorkers,” he said.
The mayor said he told the president that members of all media would be present at the press conference Monday, although the president has banned CNN, Politico and MS Now from the White House.
However, Mamdani said nothing Monday as the president called news outlets “fake news’ at the press conference, The New York Times reported.
The major TV networks suspended their pooled coverage of Trump on Monday after the ban.
