Sept. 16 (UPI) — A Los Angeles news helicopter dispatched to cover a fatal bus collision crashed Tuesday evening, killing three people, officials said.

The helicopter went down between two buildings in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Chatsworth shortly before 7 p.m. PDT and erupted into flames, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

The LAFD initially said four patients were assessed at the scene, with three pronounced dead and one transported to a hospital. LAFD Battalion Chief Rico Gross later said a second person was also hospitalized. The conditions of those hospitalized were not immediately released.

Los Angeles Fire Capt. Branden Silverman told reporters at the scene that at least one of the dead was believed to have been a pedestrian on the ground when the crash occurred.

NBCLA confirmed that it was a NewsChopper4 helicopter. NBCLA identified the two people aboard the aircraft as pilot George Marciniw and Eliana Moreno, aerial photographer and reporter with NBCLA and Telemundo 52.

“We are deeply saddened to share that a helicopter providing aerial news coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 was involved in a fatal accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening,” NBC4 and Telemundo 52 said in a statement.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives.”

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said.

The helicopter was one of several news aircraft that were dispatched to cover a collision between a bus and a vehicle that occurred shortly after 5 p.m. The LAFD said in a statement that two people were killed in that incident and another six were transported to local hospitals.

More than 70 firefighters responded to the scene of the helicopter crash and extinguished the blaze, Gross said.

“This is a very, very tragic day in Los Angeles,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a press conference.

“This is a heartbreaking night for our city and my thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the families and loved ones that we lost today.”
